A faulty switchboard can be seriously dangerous, so let’s deal with the serious bit first. If there’s a burning smell from switchboard components in your home or building, phone us urgently on 09 379 9198. Don’t wait to see if it clears on its own, and get everyone away from the switchboard while you call. Other switchboard faults are less urgent, but they’re still worth taking seriously. A switchboard that’s flickering, buzzing, or won’t stop cutting power to parts of your home or building is usually trying to tell you something, and it’s worth knowing what.
We cover what’s normal wear and tear, what’s an actual switchboard fault, and when a problem has gone from “annoying” to “get everyone clear and call someone now”. Already know what’s wrong and just need it sorted? Our Auckland electricians can take it from there.
Does your switchboard keep tripping? Three things usually cause it:
Beyond burning smells and tripping, these are the switchboard fault symptoms we’d want to know about:
A switchboard burning smell is one of the few electrical symptoms that can’t wait until it’s convenient. It usually means insulation is melting or a connection is arcing inside the board, both of which generate heat right next to live wiring and flammable materials. Left alone, that’s exactly how a switchboard fire starts.
If you notice it:
The switchboard is the heart of the property’s electrical circuit, splitting incoming power into the individual circuits that run throughout the building. In multi-tenancy buildings, both apartment blocks and commercial premises, each floor or unit title usually has its own switchboard.
Power runs from the street to a meter board, then into the switchboard, where it splits into separate circuits, each protected by its own breaker or fuse. Faults are often linked to the wiring itself, either at a connection point or in the wire. We test the supply to isolate exactly where the fault sits, and repair it wherever we can.
Many older Auckland homes, especially around the city fringe and Mt Eden, still use fuses rather than modern breakers. Fuse failures are one of the most common causes of switchboard and electrical panel problems, and usually a quick fix. But components and wiring decay over time, and at some point replacing the board, its parts, or re-wiring the property becomes the sensible move.
Generally, no, especially once you’ve noticed heat, sparking, or a burning smell. A switchboard with an active fault won’t get safer on its own, and continuing to use circuits through it increases the risk of a switchboard fire or electric shock.
A minor trip on one circuit is less urgent, but it’s still worth having checked before it becomes something bigger. WorkSafe New Zealand and the relevant NZ wiring standards exist precisely because switchboard faults are a leading cause of residential and commercial electrical fires, and they’re almost always preventable with an early check.
An electrical safety check for Auckland properties involves one of our registered electricians checking the switchboard connection by connection: testing breakers and fuses, looking for heat damage or corrosion, testing earthing, and confirming safety switches trip when they should.
We suggest this if your board is over 20 years old, you’re buying, selling, or renting out a property, or you’ve recently renovated and added new circuits. Still running on fuses rather than breakers? That’s usually a sign the rest of the board hasn’t been updated either.
If you smell burning, see sparks, or anything that smells like smoke, call us immediately on 09 379 9198, and dial 111 first if there’s an active fire. Tripping, buzzing, or discolouration aren’t emergencies in the same way, but book a safety check before they get worse. Already know your switchboard needs replacing? We can handle that side of things.
